Abstract
OBJECTIVES: Diabetes mellitus is significantly associated with posterior circulation ischemic stroke. We aimed to compare the characteristics of vertebrobasilar plaques in symptomatic patients with and without diabetes using high-resolution vessel wall magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomographic angiography.Entities:

Figure 1.Representative of a culprit plaque with the presence of IPH and spotty calcification in a patient with diabetes. A 71-year-old male patient with transient ischemic attack in the posterior circulation underwent high-resolution MRI scan 14 days after symptom onset. (A)TOF-MRA image demonstrated a focal stenosis of the left vertebral artery (white arrow). (B)Pre-contrast and (D)post-contrast MR images demonstrated the presence of an eccentric hemorrhagic plaque. (C)Reconstructed CTA images perpendicular to the vessel performed 2 days prior HR-VWI scan demonstrated the presence of spotty calcification (black arrow).
Figure 2.Representative of a culprit plaque without the presence of calcification in a patient without diabetes. A 67-year-old male patient with transient ischemic attack in the posterior circulation underwent high-resolution MRI scan 14 days after symptom onset. (A)PC-MRA image demonstrated a focal stenosis of the right vertebral artery (white arrow). (B)Pre-contrast and (D)post-contrast MR images demonstrated the presence of an eccentric plaque. (C)Reconstructed CTA images perpendicular to the vessel performed 2 days prior HR-VWI scan demonstrated the presence of non-calcified plaque (white arrow).
