Abstract
In this article, the authors introduce the concept of a transitional physiology which governs fluid and electrolyte balance in the immediate postnatal period. The important impact of the extrauterine environment on fluid balance is also discussed. Finally, the pathophysiology of diuresis in RDS, and fluid shifts in the VLBW infant with therapeutic recommendations are presented.Entities:
