Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has exposed the vulnerabilities of children with medical complexity (CMC). This article uniquely describes how pediatric providers in various clinical settings can adapt routine healthcare maintenance visits to meet the needs of CMC in the era of COVID-19. We also discuss unique visit components important to address when providing primary care to CMC, including caregiver support, disaster preparedness, long-term care planning, and telemedicine. Special considerations in preventive care for children with medical complexity
| Topic | Key points |
| Vaccinations | Specialized vaccines such as COVID-19, pneumococcal-23, meningococcal ACWY, and meningococcal B, should be considered in all CMC, when indicated |
| Development | CMC are at risk for developmental delays and interruptions in therapy during COVID. Providers should assess the developmental progression of CMC at each visit and inquire about services |
| Family and caregiver support | Clear communication between families and providers is critical to providing them with the support needed to optimize CMC's care |
| Long-term care planning | Conversations around long-term care planning and having a care plan in case of emergencies with families for CMC is crucial for continuity of care |
| Telemedicine | Telemedicine may be particularly beneficial for CMC because they can avoid transportation barriers to care, potentially improve medication comprehension, and optimize their home environment |
