Abstract
BACKGROUND: Healthcare use is increasing, and health anxiety (HA) is recognized as an important associated factor. Previous research on the association between HA and healthcare use has mostly explored HA as a dichotomous construct, which contrasts the understanding of HA as a continuous construct, and compared healthcare use to non-use. There is a need for studies that examine the association between healthcare use and the continuum of HA in a general population. AIM: To explore the association between HA and primary, somatic specialist and mental specialist healthcare use and any differences in the association by level of healthcare use.Entities:

|---|---|
| 1 | Do you think there is something seriously wrong with your body? |
| 2 | Do you worry a lot about your health? |
| 3 | Is it hard for you to believe the doctor when he tells you there is nothing to worry about? |

a mental illness is registered with the question “have you had mental illness for which you have sought help?” when analysing primary and somatic specialist healthcare use, and with HADS for mental healthcare use
b Included adjustment variables: Age, gender, education, household income, physical and mental morbidity, living with a spouse/partner, quality of friendship and participation in organised activity
