Breastfeeding Coaching Program for Late Preterm Infants Discharged from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
| Session | Time | Contents | Method | Recommendation | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| First | At discharge | · | Feeding and physical characteristics of LPIs | · | Lecture via the web | · | Regular pumping to stimulate breastmilk production |
| · | Education of proper feeding methods for LPIs | ||||||
| · | Education on how to pump regularly | ||||||
| Second | First home visit | · | Assessment of LPI's feeding ability and total amount of daily intake | · | Lecture via the web | · | Continuation pumping until breastfeeding is well established |
| · | Evaluating whether the LPI's intake was sufficient (weight gain or the number of wet diapers) | ||||||
| · | Providing an explanation about the LPI's health condition and status of growth | ||||||
| Third | Second home visit | · | All of above | · | One-on-one demonstration and practice | · | Attempting to latch at breast on a regular daily basis |
| · | Providing practical support for feeding at the breast directly | · | Practical support on latching and breastfeeding | ||||
| · | Encouragement of direct feeding at the breast at least once a day | ||||||
| Fourth | Third home visit | · | All of above | · | One-on-one demonstration and practice | · | Facilitation latch at breast and milk transfer |
| · | Encouragement of direct feeding at the breast as often as mother can | · | Practical support on breastfeeding skills | ||||
| Fifth | Fourth home visit | · | All of above | · | One-on-one demonstration and practice | · | Feeding at the breast exclusively |
| · | Continuation of exclusive breastfeeding 8~12 times a day for the first 6 months of infancy | · | Practical support and encouragement | ||||
