Abstract
CONTEXT: Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is a cyto-preparatory technique that may be applied to fine-needle aspiration (FNA) samples. However, its efficacy over conventional smears (CS) in thyroid is controversial. AIMS: The aim of this study was to compare CS versus LBC (SurePath, BD) preparations in thyroid FNA samples for diagnostic efficacy. SETTINGS ANDEntities:

Figure 1Paired Conventional smears (CS) versus Liquid based Cytology (LBC) in representative case of colloid goiter (a and b) and lymphocytic thyroiditis (c and d). [a and c, May-Grünwald Giemsa stain; b and d, Papanicolaou stain]
Figure 2Paired Conventional smears (CS) versus Liquid based Cytology (LBC) in representative case of follicular neoplasm (a and b) showing fewer microfollicles in LBC and comparable morphology in Hurtle cell neoplasm (c and d). [a and c, May-Grünwald Giemsa stain; b and d, Papanicolaou stain]
Figure 3Paired Conventional smears (CS) versus Liquid based Cytology (LBC) in representative case of Papillary thyroid carcinoma (a-d), showing intranuclear inclusions (a and b), and pale nuclear chromatin (c and d); anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (e and f) showing scattered tumour cells in a necroinflammatory background. [a,c and e, May-Grünwald Giemsa stain; b, d and f, Papanicolaou stain]
