Brain edema.

Current concepts on the development of brain edema are briefly reviewed. The common classification into vasogenic and cytotoxic edema is a simplification and does not cover all types of edema. Alternative routes of edema resolution are discussed. More basic data on the mechanisms of development and regression of brain edema are needed before more successful treatments are likely to be found.
