Abstract
RATIONALE: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe mental disorder with affective, cognitive, and somatic symptoms. Mood congruent cognitive biases, including a negative attentional bias, are important for development, maintenance, and recurrence of depressive symptoms. MDD is associated with maladaptive changes in the biological stress systems such as dysregulations of central noradrenergic alpha2-receptors in the locus coeruleus-noradrenergic system, which can affect cognitive processes including attention. Patients with adverse childhood experiences (ACE), representing severe stress experiences in early life, might be particularly affected.Entities:

Fig. 1 Procedure of the emotional dot probe task: after presentation of a fixation cross (500 ms), a pair of face pictures of the same person occurred (500 ms) followed by a bar (1100 ms). Subjects were asked to respond to the bar with either left or right keystroke according to the position of the bar. In congruent trials, the bar replaced the position of a face picture with an emotional expression (happy or sad), in incongruent trials, the bar replaced the position of a face picture with neutral expression.
