Abstract
OBJECTIVES: Delirium is an acute fluctuating disorder of attention and awareness. It is associated with autonomic dysfunction and increased mortality. The primary endpoint of our study was to measure autonomic activity in acute stroke patients, by means of heart rate variability analysis, in order to identify autonomic modifications that can predispose to delirium.Entities:

Fig. 2Frequency domain analysis. Comparison of HRV parameters in DLR+ (delirium) vs DLR– (no delirium) patients. HR: heart rate (beats per minute); STD: standard deviation of heart rate; LF: low-frequency component; HF: high-frequency component; n.s.: not significant
Fig. 3HRV frequency domain analysis in two patients from the DLR + and DLR − groups. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analysis in frequency domain; autoregressive model. Grey panel indicates the HF portion of the power spectrum (0.15-0.40 Hz). Upper panel: a patient from the DLR– group. Lower panel: a patient from the DLR+ group. The HF spectral peak (arrows) is much smaller in the DLR+ patient than in the DLR–. LF: low frequency; HF: high frequency; PSD: power spectrum density
