A case of fatal enterotoxicosis complicated with acute bronchopneumonia caused by Staphylococcus aureus strains producing enterotoxin A.

J Duben1, J Sourek, M S Bergdoll.

Abstract

This is a case report of a female patient 20 years of age who died of congestive heart failure as the result of acute staphylococcal bronchopneumonia resulting from possible aspiration during apparent staphylococcal enterotoxicosis. The diagnosis was supported by the isolation of the same strain of Staphylococcus aureus from the lungs, tonsils, and intestinal contents. Isolates from all three sources produced enterotoxin A, a common food poisoning toxin.
