Abstract
BACKGROUND: Blood donors are on average healthier than the general population, a phenomenon known as the "healthy donor effect." Earlier studies have also pointed to healthier behaviors among whole blood donors than the general population. This study is aimed at assessing the prevalence of four healthy behaviors (sufficient physical activity, avoiding cigarette smoking, low to moderate alcohol use, and maintaining a healthy weight) among platelet donors and to compare the results with those in the general population of similar ages.Entities:

Figure 1Comparison of education level and prevalence of health behaviors between platelet donors and adults in the general population (GP) of similar ages. Abbreviations: meeting PA: meeting weekly PA recommendations. Higher education is defined as bachelor's or higher degree; meeting weekly PA recommendations is defined as at least 150 min per week of moderate-intensity activity, or at least 75 min per week of vigorous-intensity activity, or an equivalent combination; more frequent drinking is defined as ≥1 to ≤5 times per week; obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of >30 kg/m2.
