Abstract
BACKGROUND: Critical illness is associated with cognitive, physical, and psychological impairments; however, evidence of the severity and frequency of impairments in Chinese survivors of mechanical ventilation in an intensive care unit (ICU) remains limited. Our aim was to investigate the incidence and severity of impairments in Chinese survivors of mechanical ventilation in ICU and to explore risk factors influencing specific impairments.Entities:

Data are presented as n (%). Of 248 patients enrolled in the study; 130 patients completed the interview. §MV, mechanical ventilation; ∫AECOPD, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; ‖APACHE II, acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II. Scores range from 0 to 71 (higher score indicates a worse outcome). **, P<0.01.

Figure 3Functional disability prevalence. Pie chart shows the incidence of functional disability according to score on ADL scale. If ≥2 items scored ≥3 points, or the total ADL scale score was ≥22 points, it was considered obvious disability of daily living. ADL, activities of daily living.
