Abstract
Trivalent cations of the lanthanide series (La3+----Yb3+) stimulated uptake of proline or glucose in rabbit small intestinal brush-border membrane vesicles. The lanthanides stimulated uptake to an extent greater than Al3+, choline, and in many cases, Na+. A time-course of Er3+-stimulated glucose uptake gave initial rates and overshoots greater than Na+ stimulation. The best activators were Sm3+, Eu3+ and Tm3+, which stimulated proline initial uptakes by 400-600%, and stimulated glucose uptake by 120-150%, compared to Na+. The best lanthanide cotransport activators possessed high third ionization potentials.Entities:
