Abstract
BACKGROUND: Mother's milk improves outcomes. Referral neonatal intensive care units face unique lactation challenges with maternal-infant separation and maternal pump dependency. Little is known about lactation resource allocation in this high-risk population. RESEARCH AIMS: To determine differences in human milk outcomes, (1) the proportion of infants fed exclusive or any mother's milk and (2) recorded number and volume of pumped mothers' milk bottles, between two models of lactation care in a referral neonatal intensive care unit.Entities:

Definitions, Level of Measurement, and Analysis Conducted for Each Study Variable.
| Variable | Definition | Measurement Level | Analysis Conducted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birth gestational age | Completed weeks gestation at birth | continuous | Mann Whitney |
| Birth weight | Weight in grams at birth | continuous | Mann Whitney |
| Age at admission | Infants days of age upon NICU admission | continuous | Mann Whitney |
| Any MOM/any DM/any formula | Participant fed any MOM/any DM/any formula during NICU stay | nominal |
|
| Exclusive MOM | Participant fed 100% MOM during NICU stay (no DM or formula) | nominal |
|
| MOM bottles stored | Number of MOM bottles stored/month by hospital milk room | continuous |
|
| Volume of MOM stored | Milliliters of MOM stored/month by hospital milk room | continuous |
|
Note. MOM = mother’s own milk, DM = donor milk.
