Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Rapidly increasing numbers of confirmed cases and deaths during the 2019 coronavirus disease outbreak (COVID-19) resulted in widespread psychological problems in the Chinese population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the sleep quality and changes in sleep patterns before and during the outbreak in the general population in China and to determine factors related to sleep quality.Entities:

Time difference: time during the outbreak minus time before the outbreak. + means time during the epidemic was delayed or increased compared with that before the epidemic. − means time during the epidemic was advanced or reduced compared with that before the epidemic. PSQI score as well as bedtime, rise time, midpoint time in bed, and time in bed before and during the epidemic were assessed with the independent t test. Time difference in each sleep pattern was assessed with the Mann–Whitney U test.
Fig. 1Sleep patterns of poor sleepers and good sleepers before and during the COVID-19 epidemic. Bars show mean ± standard errors. ***p < 0.001 indicates differences between the group before the COVID-19 epidemic and the group during the COVID-19 epidemic for poor sleepers or good sleepers; δδp < 0.01 indicates differences between poor sleepers and good sleepers before the epidemic; αααp < 0.001 indicates differences between poor sleepers and good sleepers during epidemic.
