Abstract
This paper presents an overview of the potential risks associated with the use of the flexible fiberoptic sigmoidoscope. A reasonable review of the literature on endoscopy reveals few instances of admitted complications. We draw upon a decade of personal observations and experience with over 10,000 examinations to substantiate the actual and potential hazards of flexible fiberoptic sigmoidoscopy. A conceptual approach to recognizing and avoiding the consequences of complications is presented.Mesh:
