Abstract

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to identify preoperative risk factors for VTE and develop a predictive model that can be integrated into electronic health records (EHRs).
METHODS: Retrospective review of patients undergoing thoracolumbar fusion from 2016 to 2018 in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was performed.
RESULTS: Increasing age, BMI, and several other factors were significant predictors of increased risk for postoperative VTE. The predictive model had an area under the curve of 0.683, indicating acceptable discrimination. DISCUSSION: Our findings build upon previous studies by presenting a model equation that can be rapidly integrated into EHRs for validation.
