Abstract
OBJECTIVES: Rheumatoid arthritis is a multisystemic inflammatory disease characterized by destruction of the joints. An effective treatment method of the disease has not been developed yet. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effects of bee (Apis mellifera anatoliaca) venom (BV) on serum inflammatory parameters, serum antioxidant load and clinical parameters of experimentally induced adjuvant arthritis in rats.Entities:

Animal groups and treatments applied in the experiment
| Groups | Treatments |
|---|---|
| I | 0.3 ml of physiological saline was injected intradermally in the right rear claw of the animals. Served as negative controls |
| II | Experimental arthritis was induced by intradermal injection of 0.3 ml of Freund’s incomplete adjuvant (F-5506 Sigma, Darmstadt, Germany) in the right rear claw, 2 µg/kg BV was injected intradermally at 15th day |
| III | Experimental arthritis was induced by intradermal injection of 0.3 ml of adjuvant Freund’s incomplete adjuvant (F-5506 Sigma, Darmstadt, Germany) in the right rear claw, 4 µg/kg BV was injected intradermally at 15th day |
| IV | Experimental arthritis was induced by intradermal injection of 0.3 ml of Freund’s incomplete adjuvant (F-5506 Sigma, Darmstadt, Germany) in the right rear claw, 20 µg/kg BV was injected intradermally at 15th day |
| V | Experimental arthritis was induced by intradermal injection of 0.3 ml of Freund’s incomplete adjuvant (F-5506 Sigma, Darmstadt, Germany) in the right rear claw, 0.3 ml PS was injected intradermally at 15th day and served as sham-treatment group |

Fig. 1Adjuvant injected sites before (A, C) and after bee venom (BV) treatment (B – 4 μg/kg and D – 20 μg/kg BV injected animals). Significant resolution of the clinical arthritis symptoms was observed in the 20 μg/kg BV-treated group.
