Use of three-dimensional technology in tracheal intubation: an alternative to minimize the contamination risk by COVID-19.

Dear Editor, Because of the spreading of acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) the use of personal protective equipment was adopted by whole-population and, within a short period of time, these medical supplies became scarce and expensive, therefore leading to a severe global crisis, mainly in health services. Based on this scenario, rapid and low-cost methods are required to stop the virus spread.(,) Three-dimensional printing has enabled the production of equipment such as videolaryngoscope systems in a timely fashion and with low cost.() Videolaryngoscopy makes tracheal intubation more successful.() In addition, in COVID-19 cases this equipment may increase the distance between the providers and the patients airways, facilitate the interventions of health care professional, reduce duration of procedure, and minimize the contamination.(-) In cases of the collapse of the health resources, such in COVID-19 pandemic, the three-dimensional printing technology may be an efficient and low-cost alternative, particularly in countries with limited resources. Caro Editor, Devido à disseminação do coronavírus da síndrome respiratória aguda grave 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a utilização de equipamentos de proteção foi adotada pela população e, em pouco tempo, eles se tornaram escassos e onerosos, ocasionando grave crise global, principalmente nos serviços de saúde. Diante desse cenário, soluções rápidas e de menor custo tornaram-se necessárias para conter a propagação do vírus.(,) A impressão tridimensional tem possibilitado a confecção de equipamentos, como sistemas de videolaringoscopia, em tempo hábil e com baixo custo.() A videolaringoscopia torna a intubação traqueal mais assertiva.() Além disso, nos casos de COVID-19, aumenta a distância entre o rosto do profissional e a via aérea do paciente, facilita as intervenções do profissional assistente e pode diminuir a duração do procedimento, reduzindo a chance de contaminação.(-) Em casos de colapso dos recursos em saúde, como na pandemia da COVID-19, a impressão de equipamentos, por tecnologia tridimensional, pode ser uma alternativa eficaz e de baixo custo, sobretudo em locais com poucos recursos.
