Figure 1.Putative Opsin (OPN)-mediated signaling promotes relaxation of airway smooth muscle (ASM). Light, synthetic, or endogenous agonist(s) activate the OPN receptor, which initiates a signaling cascade causing activation of AC via Gαs leading to an increase in cAMP, followed by activation of PKA, which can promote downstream pathways of ASM relaxation. AC = adenylyl cyclase; HOOC = carboxyl group; K+ = potassium; P = phosphate; PKA = protein kinase A.
