Abstract
BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a major cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Evidence indicates that endothelial dysfunction is central to the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. This study assessed the level of the components of the arginine-nitric oxide pathway to evaluate endothelial dysfunction in normotensive pregnancies and pregnancies complicated with preeclampsia.Entities:

PE: preeclamptic women; NP: normotensive pregnant women; GA: gestational age; BMI: body mass index; ADMA: asymmetric dimethylarginine. Data was presented as mean ± SD. The means of the clinical variables in PE were compared with NP using independent t-test. Statistical significance level was considered at p value < 0.05.

PE: preeclamptic women; NP: normotensive pregnant women; IUGR: intrauterine growth restriction. Continuous data was presented as mean ± SD, while categorical data was expressed as frequency (percentage). Independent t-test was used to compare means of the continuous data while χ2 or Fischer's exact test (when n < 5 was used to compare the categorical data. Statistically significant level was set at a p value < 0.05.

One-way ANCOVA followed by Bonferroni post hoc analysis to compare the groups with NP after adjusting for gestational age at delivery.
