A study of the photoinduced mutagenicity of methylene blue.

B Gutter, W T Speck, H S Rosenkranz.

Abstract

Illumination of Salmonella typhimurium strains in the presence of methylene blue resulted in the production of mutations of the base-substitution type. This photodynamic effect mediated by the dye was separable from the genetic event seen when bacteria are illuminated in the absence of added photosensitizers.
