Abstract
BACKGROUND: Knowledge is lacking on patient goals and motivation for carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis (CMCJ OA) surgery. The objective of this study was to explore patient goals and motivation for surgery, whether patient goals were reflected in self-reports of pain and function, and factors characterizing patients highly motivated for surgery.Entities:

Note. Numbers are reported as mean and standard deviation (SD), number and proportions (%), or median and interquartile range (IQR). Radiographic carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis (CMCJ OA) severity is classified using modified Kellgren-Lawrence grade (KLG) scale (grade 0-4, 2 ≥ CMCJ OA). Pain is measured using Numeric Rating Scale (NRS: 0-10, 0 = no pain). Grip and pinch strength is measured in Newton (N) using the Grippit electronic instrument. Hand activity performance is measured using Measure of Activity Performance of the Hand (MAP-Hand) (score: 1-4, 1 = no activity problems). Disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand is measured using Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire (QuickDASH) (score: 0-100, 0 = no disability).
