Abstract
BACKGROUND: Comparative optimism, the belief that negative events are more likely to happen to others rather than to oneself, is well established in health risk research. It is unknown, however, whether comparative optimism also permeates people's health expectations and potentially behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic.Entities:

Figure 1Frequencies of responses for items assessing risk of COVID‐19 infection (Subscale 1: Controllable COVID‐19 risks.)
Figure 2Frequencies of responses for items assessing risk of post‐COVID‐19 consequences (Subscale 2: Uncontrollable COVID‐19 risks)
Figure 3Frequencies of responses for items assessing future risks of COVID‐19 infection (Subscale 3: Future COVID‐19 risks)
Means (M), standard deviations (SD) and significance (P values from single‐sample t tests analyses) of comparative optimism overall for each subscale and per item. Positive scores suggest comparative optimism, negative scores suggest comparative pessimism
