Abstract
BACKGROUND: Despite important progress, the burden of under-5 mortality remains unacceptably high, with an estimated 5.3 million deaths in 2018. Lack of access to health care is a major risk factor for under-5 mortality, and distance to health care facilities has been shown to be associated with less access to care in multiple contexts, but few such studies have used a counterfactual approach to produce causal estimates.Entities:

Notes: U5M under-5 mortality
Hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) from proportional hazards models. Distance is linear distance to nearest health facility from village centroid. The coefficient on the distance variable represents the HR for a one-kilometer increase in distance. The reference category for mother’s education is ‘less than primary’, and for mother’s age is ‘19–35 years old’
