Abstract
BACKGROUND: Apatinib, a selective inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR 2), has exhibited modest antitumor efficacy in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and tolerability of apatinib versus sorafenib in patients with advanced HCC.Entities:

Figure 2Representative images before and after apatinib treatment in case 1. In this 48-year-old man with primary hepatocellular carcinoma, baseline contrast-enhanced CT (A) demonstrates multifocal tumors. After 8 weeks of therapy with apatinib. Multifocal tumors have decreased in density and size (B), showing greater homogeneity and better defined margins. Findings at follow-up CT represent response according to CT-morphologic criteria.
Figure 3Representative images before and after apatinib treatment in case 2. In this 39-year-old man with primary hepatocellular carcinoma, baseline contrast-enhanced CT (A) demonstrates irregular nodular with portal vein tumor thrombus. After 8 weeks of therapy with apatinib, there is over 30% decrease in diameter of the sum of target lesions through arterial-enhancing CT and MRI.
Figure 4Kaplan-Meier estimated progression-free survival (A) and overall survival (B) curves of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma in the sorafenib and apatinib groups.
