Abstract
BACKGROUND: Approximately half of all young adults in Sweden are university students, and alcohol consumption is often a central part of students' social lives. Heavy drinking is associated with negative consequences, such as poor study skills, sexual risk-taking, violence and accidents. The aim of the present study is to assess the levels of alcohol intoxication as well as hazardous alcohol use among students at Swedish universities.Entities:

Mean breath alcohol concentrations (BrACs) (%) and proportions (%) of participants with high intoxication levels and hazardous alcohol use.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BrAC%, | 0.079 (0.049) | 0.081 (0.053) | 0.084 (0.045) | 0.084 (0.046) | 0.063 (0.048) | |

| Proportion with high intoxication level,b % | 35.9 | 34.9 | 38.8 | 41.8 | 25.2 | χ2(3) = 8.93, |
| Proportion with hazardous use,c % | 86.6 | 82.8 | 91.2 | 92.8 | 78.6 | χ2(3) = 16.53, |
M = mean value; SD = standard deviation.
aBased on those who had a BrAC above 0%. bA high intoxication level is defined as a BrAC of 0.100% or more. cHazardous alcohol use is defined as having 4 or 5 (for women and men, respectively) points or more on the AUDIT-C. dOne-way ANOVA F-test; chi-square test (χ2).
Factors associated with participant breath alcohol concentration (BrAC), assessed by linear multiple regression (n = 530).
