Abstract

CASE: In this case, we report on a carbon-fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone plate failure 4 months after implantation, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and protective weight-bearing in a 75-year-old woman who sustained a nontraumatic pathological distal femur fracture due to lymphoma.
CONCLUSION: Although carbon-fiber composite implants are regularly used and, to date, there have been no reports of early clinical failures, the longevity of the implant's structural integrity after high-dose radiation and/or chemotherapy treatment has not been fully explored. Therefore, we deem it too early to conclude that carbon-fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone implants are superior to conventional implants in treating (pathological) fractures.
