Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: COVID-19 is a new, highly transmissible disease to which healthcare workers (HCWs) are exposed, especially in the intensive care unit (ICU). Information related to protection mechanisms is heterogeneous, and the infected HCWs' number is increasing. This review intends to summarize the current knowledge and practices to protect ICU personnel during the patient management process in the context of the current pandemic. RECENTEntities:

Personal protection equipment
| Body part | Protection | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eyes | Goggles | Protection to the eye area Light weight | Fog up Skin pressure injuries |
| Facial shield | Full-face coverture | Forehead skin injuries | |
| Nose/mouth | N95/FFP2/FFP3 | Hermetic seal Better protection Disposable | Skin and ear injuries Communication difficulties Headache |
| EHFR | Antifogging properties It is not disposable Longer filter lifetime Comfortable | Does not protect the patient from user exhalation Does not protect eyes Communication difficulties Higher cost Requires decontamination | |
| EFFR | High protection level Covers entire face It is not disposable Longer filter lifetime Comfortable | Does not protect the patient from user exhalation Communication difficulties Higher cost Does not allow the use of prescription glasses Requires decontamination | |
| PAPRs | High protection level Comfortable Useful in high-risk AGPs | Need specific training Communication difficulties High risk of contamination when removing Higher cost Need large supply of filters Requires decontamination | |
| Hands | Double gloves | Decreases skin contamination | Makes procedures difficult. |
| Body | Long gown | Protects against splashes Easy to put on Easy to remove | Partial leg exposure It allows neck exposure Needs to be complemented by a surgical hat |
| Coverall | Covers the entire body Disposable Integrated hood Fluid and particle proof | Causes diaphoresis, heat, and discomfort More difficult to doff | |
| Shoes cover | Lightweight | Can become difficult to remove |
FFP, facial filter piece; EHFR, elastomeric half-face respirator; EFFR, elastomeric full-face respirator; PAPRS, powered air-purifying respirator system
Suggested donning and doffing checklist. Additional recommendations: remove personal items (jewelry, watch, etc.); tie up your hair, check that the PPE is complete, in good condition, and in an adequate size
