Cytomorphological comparison of mechanical and chemical defoaming of a yeast culture.

D Vraná1, L Seichert.

Abstract

Defoaming of the medium by a rotating turbine during yeast cultivation, in contrast to defoaming by oil, results in fading away of cells of higher age categories and in an increase of dead cells proportion in the population. The negative effect of the mechanical defoaming device did not manifest itself in the amount of biomass obtained but in the cell numbers observed.
