Interviewed Group Themes Selected Exemplar Quotations.
| Themes | Exemplar Quotations |
|---|---|
| Test circumstance and reaction to HBV-positive state | “I do a general test every 3 years, I ran the tests including hepatitis B test, which was positive. A pharmacist told me there was no cure for the virus, so I felt as if I was going to die.” (26-year-old businesswoman) |
| Disclosure of HBV to the family | “When I was diagnosed, I could not tell my parents and siblings, because I did not know how they will react to it, my mum is hypertensive and diabetic, we keep things that will cause fear from her.” (28-year-old female lecturer) |
| Impact of HBV-positive test and disclosure problem on the family | “After the diagnosis of hepatitis B, I have had sex with another lady, though I used condom, but I felt bad, I should not have done this to her, because I did not tell her.” (28-year-old student) |
| Participants’ opinion of the cause of problem making HBV disclosure difficult | “We need enough information like it is in South Africa about HIV, so people will be aware, test and know their status, people who know their status can then relate together.” (28-year-old student) |
| Participants’ suggestion of cure for the problems of HBV nondisclosure | “We don’t get to hear about hepatitis B, we hear about Ebola virus and HIV, government should embark on mass publicity about the virus.” (39-year-old Engineer) |
