Abstract
BACKGROUND: Fear of childbirth is a common health concern for women during pregnancy. The Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire (W-DEQ) is widely used to measure childbirth fear during pregnancy. However, this instrument is yet to be validated in Malawi, Africa. Our study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the W-DEQ questionnaire in Malawi.Entities:

The psychometric analytical process of the Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire A (W-DEQ A)
| Description | Method | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Forward and back translation | Followed recommended guidelines by Wild et al. [ | The consensus was reached on the final version |
| 2. Content validity | Expert review ( | Mean CVI for the total scale = 0.95 |
| Validity | ||
| 1. Construct validity | EFA (factor loading ≥0.35) | a. Seven items were removed during the EFA as they had poor factor loadings and did not represent their factors. |
| CFA (χ2/ | b. Three items were removed because of poor model fit during the CFA. | |
| c. The final factor model of the W-DEQ A scale comprised 23 items, and three factors were confirmed with the following model fit indices: χ2/ | ||
| 2. Convergent validity | Pearson’s correlation | a. Significant correlation between the W-DEQ A and scales of depressive symptoms ( |
| Reliability | ||
| 1. Internal consistency | CFA Cronbach’s α | a. Total scale: 0.84; subscales: factor 1: 0.78, factor 2: 0.65, factor 3: 0.73 |
