Abstract
BACKGROUND: The "Treatise on the spleen and stomach" (Pí Wèi Lùn) is the work of the scholar and physician Li Gao (Jin-Yuan dynasties, 1115-1368 C.E., China). Li Gao described a clinical presentation that today would fall under the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and proposed the treatment with herbal medicine and nutritional guidelines. The PWL is well known for its application in the treatment of MS and autoimmune conditions. However, this theoretical "MS" has not yet been analyzed through a scientific investigation, and research on its herbal formulations for MS is scant.Entities:

Fig. 1The hierarchical structure of TCM herbal formulas. Bǔ Zhōng Yì Qì Tāng (BZYQT 补中益气汤 “Supplement the center and boost the Qi decoction”) is composed by the chief, the deputy, the assistant and the envoy herbs to address the therapeutic principle of “tonifying the middle burner and raising the Yang”. The herbal formula Huáng Qí Rén Shēn Tāng (HQRST 黄芪⼈参湯 “Astragalus and Ginseng decoction”), can be considered a modification of Bǔ Zhōng Yì Qì Tāng , and the seven herbs that overlap both formulas are displayed in the intersection of the circles. In Huáng Qí Rén Shēn Tāng, the use of Atractylodis rhizome (苍术 cāngzhú) is recommended instead of White Atractylodis (白朮 bái zhú) when there is no sweating (Shou-Zhong & Jian-Yong, 1993).
Analysis of the . The correlation between the possible “MS” clinical presentation, and the Western medicine established MS signs and symptoms show a close correspondence.

Fig. 2The effect of (黄芪 huáng qí), (甘草 gān cǎo) (人参 rén shēn) (黃柏 huáng băi) on EAE induced mice. Twenty four studies on the hierarchically most important herbs/isolates contained in Bǔ Zhōng Yì Qì Tāng 补中益气汤 “Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi decoction”) and Huáng Qí Rén Shēn Tāng (黄芪人参湯 “Astragalus and Ginseng decoction”) showed an improvement of EAE, neuronal damage and demyelination through different signaling pathways and mechanisms of action which are synergistic and complementary.
