Abstract
Large cohort and collaborative studies to date have shown that the short-term oncological outcomes appear to be at least as good as traditional laparoscopic surgery. These results need confirmation in randomized controlled trials, which are currently underway (GRECCAR 11 and COLOR III). The functional data on transanal total mesorectal excision is still very scarce and more mature data on quality of life and function outcomes are eagerly awaited. © Thieme Medical Publishers. Keywords: functional outcome; laparoscopy; oncologic outcomes; randomized controlled trials; rectal cancer; taTME; total mesorectal excision; transanal total mesorectal excision
