Serial dependence in perception requires conscious awareness.

Sujin Kim1, David Burr2, Guido Marco Cicchini3, David Alais1.

Abstract

Using a binocular rivalry paradigm combined with an orientation report task, Kim et al. find that the previous orientation biases the following perception only when it was consciously perceived. This shows that the priors for serial dependence are constructed at a later perceptual stage.
