Abstract
The following fictional case is intended as a learning tool within the Pathology Competencies for Medical Education (PCME), a set of national standards for teaching pathology. These are divided into three basic competencies: Disease Mechanisms and Processes, Organ System Pathology, and Diagnostic Medicine and Therapeutic Pathology. For additional information, and a full list of learning objectives for all three competencies, see http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/2374289517715040.1.Entities:

Summary of Ovarian Germ Cell Tumors and Their Clinicopathological Features.
| Subtype | Frequency of Incidence | Benign/Malignant | Uni/Bi-Lateral | Serum Tumor Markers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Choriocarcinoma | Very rare | Malignant | Usually unilateral | βHCG |
| Dysgerminoma | 35%-50% | Malignant | 10%-15% bilateral | Serum LDH and serum βHCG |
| Endodermal sinus tumor (yolk sac) | 20% | Malignant | Usually unilateral | AFP, alpha1-antitrypsin (rarely) |
| Embryonal carcinoma | Rare | Malignant | Usually unilateral | AFP and βHCG |
| Mixed germ cell tumor (GCT) | 10%-15% | Depending based on the cell types present | Depending based on the cell types present | |
| Teratoma | Immature (20%) of malignant GCT | Benign or malignant | 10%-15% bilateral | Immature: AFP, serum LDH, CA-125 |
Abbreviations: AFP, α-fetoprotein; βHCG, β subunit human chorionic gonadotropin; CA-125, cancer antigen 125; LDH, lactate dehydrogenase.
Figure 2.A glomeruloid proliferation of tumor cells around a central core of thin-walled vessels, that is, Schiller-Duval bodies (arrow heads), characteristic of yolk sac tumor. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) ×100. Inset. Variably sized eosinophilic hyaline globules accompany the Schiller-Duval bodies (arrows). H&E ×400.
