Abstract
BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common bacterial infections managed in general practice. Many women with symptoms of uncomplicated UTI may not benefit meaningfully from antibiotic treatment, but the evidence base is complex and there is no suitable shared decision-making resource to guide antibiotic treatment and symptomatic care for use in general practice consultations. AIM: To develop an evidence-based, shared decision-making intervention leaflet to optimise management of uncomplicated UTI for women aged <65 years in the primary care setting. DESIGN ANDEntities:

UTI = urinary tract infections.
Overarching meta-themes identified from GP and patient interviews
| Women are very knowledgeable about their UTI | There is a large variation in patient knowledge: first experience prevalence types of UTI and causes of urinary symptoms | Knowledge | |
| Majority are telephone consultations | Many find the consultation frustrating | Knowledge | |
| Women generally expect antibiotics | Do not want a quick fix: wants advice wants reassurance | Skills | |
| Mainly give safety-netting advice | It is the less experienced, not the more experienced, who want self-care advice | Knowledge | |
| Aware that AMR is a major issue | Aware of the AMR issue | Knowledge |
AMR = antimicrobial resistance. TDF = Theoretical Domains Framework. UTI = urinary tract infection.
