Ultrastructure of a neuroendocrine complex in oxyntic mucosa of normal human stomach.

T D'Adda1, C Bordi.

Abstract

The occurrence and ultrastructural characteristics of an extraepithelial neuroendocrine complex found in the oxyntic mucosa of a healthy young adult subject are described. The complex is composed of endocrine cells (P and ECL types) identical to those located intraepithelially and peripherally located axons embraced by cytoplasmic extension of scattered Schwann cells.
