Abstract
BACKGROUND: People bereaved by suicide are a vulnerable group, also at risk of dying by suicide. The importance of postvention support (intervention after suicide) has recently been highlighted; however, little is known about the support needs of parents bereaved by suicide in the UK, and the role played by general practice. AIM: To explore the perspectives, experiences, and support needs of parents bereaved by suicide. DESIGN ANDEntities:

Recommendations for general practice

Have a local strategy or protocol in place to support those bereaved by suicide, guided by policy. Awareness of regional and national support services available and literature available to offer to patients, for example, Public Health England’s Suicide bereavement communication skills training for staff. Explore local data gathering, as per National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines. Act proactively where possible and initiate contact with parents where suicide is known. Consider the practical aspects of facilitating patients visiting the practice, including the length of the appointment, possible alternatives for those not wanting to wait in the waiting room, and so on. |
How this fits in
| Parents bereaved by suicide are at risk of mental health problems and suicide. Understanding what parents’ support needs are and how they perceive the role of primary care may help inform how general practice can support these patients. This study offers an insight into the perspectives of parents bereaved by their son or daughter’s suicide and has implications for practice that may help improve the care of this vulnerable group. |
