Abstract
BACKGROUND: The EBMeDS system is the computerized clinical decision support (CCDS) system of EBPNet, a national computerized point-of-care information service in Belgium. There is no clear evidence of more complex CCDS systems to manage chronic diseases in primary care practices (PCPs). The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of EBMeDS use in improving diabetes care.Entities:

Patient and process composite scores
| Variable | Maximum score | Target |
|---|---|---|
| HbA1c | 2 (4 × 0.5) | 0.5 point for each quarter that HbA1c is measured in the previous year |
| Blood pressure | 2 (4 × 0.5) | 0.5 point for each quarter that blood pressure is measured in the previous year |
| LDL cholesterol | 1 | If LDL cholesterol is at least one time measured in the previous year |
| Microalbuminuria | 1 | If microalbuminuria is at least one time measured in the previous year |
| A prescription of statin | 1 | If a statin is prescribed in the previous 6 months |
| A prescription of aspirin/clopidogrel | 1 | If aspirin or clopidogrel is prescribed in the previous 6 months |
| A prescription of ACE-inhibitor/sartan if antihypertensive drugs are prescribed | 1 | If antihypertensive drugs are prescribed in the previous 6 months, ACE-inhibitors or sartans are recommended. If no hypertensive drugs are prescribed, the patient must have a systolic blood pressure < 130 mmHg and a diastolic blood pressure < 80 mmHg to get a score of 1 point. If systolic blood pressure > 130 mmHg or if diastolic blood pressure > 80 mmHg, the patient is diagnosed with hypertension. |
| Total | 9 | |
| HbA1c | 1 | If mean HbA1c of the previous year < 7% |
| Blood pressure | 1 | If mean systolic blood pressure of the previous year < 130 mmHg and mean diastolic blood pressure of the previous year < 80 mmHg |
| Systolic blood pressure | ||
| Diastolic blood pressure | ||
| LDL cholesterol | 1 | If mean LDL cholesterol of the previous year < 100 mg/dL |
| Total | 3 |
