Differences between baseline and week 12 were considered significant with a P‐value <0.0031 (Bonferroni correction, 0.05/16). The P‐value of week 0 vs. week 12 was analysed by the Wilcoxon matched‐pairs signed rank test. The P‐value of Δ absolute value (MTX vs. AZA) was analysed with the Mann–Whitney U‐test.

HV, Healthy Volunteers (n = 18); WK12, week 12 of systemic treatment with methotrexate or azathioprine of AD patients (n = 38, only BAFF had missing values N = 35). At baseline, 16 cytokines/chemokines were significantly different in AD patients compared with 18 healthy volunteers. After 12 weeks of treatment, 4 biomarkers* were not significantly different. Anymore differences were considered significant with a P‐value <0.0031 (Bonferroni correction, 0.05/16) analysed with Mann–Whitney U‐test.
