Abstract
Bleeding and transfusion are common in cardiac surgery and associated with poorer outcome. Bleeding is frequently due to coagulopathy caused by the complex interaction between cardiopulmonary bypass, major surgical trauma, anticoagulation management, and perioperative factors. Patient blood management has emerged to improve outcome by the prediction, prevention, monitoring, and treatment of bleeding and transfusion. Each part of this chain has several individual modalities and when combined leads to result in a better outcome. This article reviews the hemostasis disturbances in cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass and gives an overview of the most important patient blood management strategies.Entities:
