Abstract
Despite an ever-diversifying United States population, women and underrepresented minorities lack proportionate membership in the cardiothoracic surgery workforce. Many Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) members view achieving a diverse cardiothoracic surgery workforce as important. To address the needs of our specialty to better reflect and understand (cultural competence) our evolving communities, the STS created the Workforce on Diversity and Inclusion. The Workforce's mission is to cultivate an environment of inclusion and diversity within the STS as well as the cardiothoracic surgical specialty. This report will discuss the background for the creation of the Workforce on Diversity and Inclusion, describe the "return on investment" in diversity, the current state of diversity in surgery, illustrate STS members' views on the importance of a diverse specialty, and present current and future activities of the Workforce on Diversity and Inclusion.Entities:
