Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Out-of-pocket pharmaceutical expenditure (OOPPE) is a considerable burden for middle-aged and elderly adults due to their high prevalence of diseases, insufficient income and absence of medical insurance in China. The objective of this study was to assess the determinants of OOPPE among Chinese middle-aged and elderly adults.Entities:

The UEMI for those who were employed in the urban sector was formally established in 1998. After this, the NCMI for rural residents as well as URMI covering urban residents who had no formal employment were introduced in 2003 and 2007, respectively. In 2012, the integration of URMI and NCMI was gradually carried out nationwide to form URRMI.
