Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Child mortality rate in sub-Saharan Africa is 29 times higher than that in industrialized countries. Anemia is one of the preventable causes of child morbidity. During a humanitarian medical mission in rural South-Eastern Nigeria, the prevalence and risk factors of anemia were determined in the region in order to identify strategies for reduction.Entities:

Hemoglobin levels and clinical anemia.
| 1Number of Subjects with Clinical Anemia per Hb level | |
|---|---|
| 2Low Hb | 20 (83%, n=24) |
| 2Borderline Hb | 35 (69%, n =51) |

1Number of subjects with clinical anemia per Hb level given as n (percentage of cohort).
P value for above association is P=0.0457.
2Hb represents hemoglobin in mg/dl; hemoglobin levels: low (<10 mg/dl), normal (>12 mg/dl), borderline (10-11.9 mg/dl).
Hemoglobin levels and occupation of the head of household.
