Abstract
BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is among the leading causes of disability in persons 65 years and older worldwide and is known to have an impact on quality of life as well as social, cognitive, and physical functioning. Our objective was to assess statewide prevalence of self-reported hearing ability in Arizona adults and its association with general health, cognitive decline, diabetes and poor psychosocial health.Entities:

cDefined as self reporting “A little trouble”, “Moderate hearing trouble”, “A lot of trouble”, or “Deaf” in response to “Which statement best describes your hearing (without a hearing aid or other listening device)?”
dThe denominator for the variable “hearing” is the total (n = 6462). The denominators for all other prevalence estimates are the row totals for each stratum (2nd column)
eSelf-report in response to: “During the past 12 months, have you experienced confusion or memory loss that is happening more often or is getting worse?”; asked only to participants 45 years or older
fSelf-report in response to “Now thinking about your mental health, which includes stress, depression, and problems with emotions, for how many days in the past 30 days was your mental health not good?”
g Self-report in response to: “Has a doctor, nurse or other professional ever told you that you have diabetes?”
h Self-report in response to: “Would you say that in general that your health is …”
