Comparison of sepsis and non‐sepsis group, calculated by Pearson's χ2 test, independent t‐test or Mann‐Whitney U test as appropriate.
Charlson Comorbidity Index predicts 10‐year mortality from 22 comorbid conditions.
SIRS criteria: leucocytes <4 × 109/L or >12 × 109/L, respiratory rate >20 breaths/min, heart rate >90 beats/min, temperature <36.0°C or >38.3°C.
Shock was defined as the need for vasopressors the first 24 hours after ICU admission and lactate >2 mmol/L.
