Albert Heuer1, Janet Reid Hector, Valerie Cassell.

Abstract

Telehealth is a collection of methods for providing health services and support using digital technologies. Though evolving for several decades, it is only recently that the use of such applications has expanded substantially. The purpose of this paper is to provide readers with an enhanced understanding of telehealth, so they can better leverage this class of technology to the advantage of their profession and the patients they serve. To accomplish this objective, this paper focuses on the recent telehealth developments within and across allied health professions. Relevant definitions and telehealth applications are reviewed along with those which show promise on the near horizon. Legislative developments, evolving best practices, and the most prominent unresolved issues are also discussed.
