Abstract
Aerial distance sampling of bears to estimate population size has been used throughout many parts of Alaska. The distance sampling models are complex since they need to account for undetected bears and differences in detection probabilities. This will require covariates and mark-recapture data. The models proposed by Schmidt et al. do not use covariates or mark-recapture data and are inappropriate for these surveys.Entities:

CDS_2PN Population Estimate—based on a CDS model using a two‐part normal detection function (Becker & Christ, 2015). MRDS_2PN Population Estimate—estimate obtained using the best MRDS_2PN model with covariates, where AIC is used to select the best model.
Relative Bias of the CDS Estimate—the bias is calculated relative to the MRDS_2PN model as follows: [(CDS Estimate − MRDS_2PN Estimate)/MRDS_2PN Estimate]%.
