Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Alopecia areata (AA) is considered an autoimmune disorder characterized by patchy loss of hair from the scalp and other body parts. Many patients develop the disease in childhood. AIM: To answer the question whether abnormal production of some proinflammatory cytokines (IL-2, IL-6, IL-15, IL-17A and IFNγ) in children with AA may facilitate the development or progression of the disease.Entities:

Figure 1Significant difference in median plasma levels of IL-6 (A), IL-15 (B), IL-17A (C), IFN-γ (D) between the study group (AA patients) and healthy controls
Figure 2Non-significant difference in median plasma levels of IL-2 between the study group (AA patients) and healthy controls
Comparison of the mean serum cytokine levels (pg/ml) in patients with alopecia areata (AA) in following groups: (1a) AA patients with < 25% scalp ivolvement; (1b) AA patients with 25–99% scalp involvement; (2) patients with alopecia totalis (AT) or alopecia universalis (AU); (3) patients with ophiasis; (Total) whole group
